Firstly, parenting teenagers is meant to be difficult _ thats what nature intended. This session explains why they behave as they do, adolescent development and the search for autonomy, whats behind rebellious behaviours, when to worry, and when to take decisive action as a parent. The content is based on Andrew Fullers work on building protective factors and minimising risk factors as children make the transition into teenage years. It has a theme of boosting positive mental health and providing the right mix of firm boundaries, opportunities to learn by natural consequences and genuine love and understanding. Included is an overview of the key developmental tasks teenagers need to negotiate in order to achieve adulthood, and we explore our role in helping them do this. There is information on setting effective boundaries, time for questions, some amusing real-life case studies and some surefire tips to calm the waters when adolescents behave in challenging ways at home.
